Bio
Born to Smithcraft parents, his father a journeyman, his mother raised in the Hall, Danyl has followed his father to each of his postings spending time at the Smith Crafthall and at a posting to Keroon Hold where his father completed his time as Journeyman. From the moment of his birth Danyl was expected to follow his father into the craft and from an early age was taught the ways of charcoal making and bellows operation. When he came to apprentice age his apprentice knot was simply a formality. The skills learnt at his father's side gave him a solid grounding in blacksmithing and iron work. It was when he approached the other subjects of apprenticeship that his difficulties began.

Like all apprentices Danyl was required to study a wide range of smithing subjects. Where hands and a keen eye for detail were required Danyl held ground and sometimes even excelled. But when more literate studies are scheduled Danyl seems to schedule time off - at least mentally. To the frustration of the Masters, and his own father, he shows promise in drawing and sketching but is nearly unable to read or write labels or instructions. Figures seem to baffle him when first presented. Only his perseverance makes them reveal their secrets. Among his teachers some think he is lazy or ambitionless. Danyl's personality has only served to reinforce this perception. Always self conscious and aware that he didn't understand the Harper's lessons like the other children, Danyl has learnt to hide his difficulty with reading and writing by blending in to the world around him. Reluctant to put himself forward or to defend himself when accused of being lazy or incompetent, he prefers to work hard away from prying or judgemental eyes. He survives as an apprentice thanks to the favour of a few Journeymen and Masters who recognise his competency at the range of Smithing skills and see his application to his studies while experiencing such difficulty as an asset. Danyl returns this faith in him as staunch loyalty to his craft and is fiercly proud of Mastersmith Derien and his role in bringing down the instigators.

Danyl is known among the apprentices for his high pain tolerance. Forge work requires an above average tolerance for heat and burns, but the story of Danyl's facial scar has reached legendary proportions. When performing striking work with another apprentice, the journeyman holding the spar slipped driving the red hot iron into Danyl's face. Then only 14 turns, Danyl calmly stepped outside, dunking his head into the icy water barrel outside, an activty he repeated, only coming up for air, until a Healer could arrive to take care of the injury. Danyl's quick and reasoned action saved him from more severe scaring and from losing most of the flesh of his cheek.

The one area where Danyl is happy to be noticed is in the informal games the Smith apprentices engage in. His favourite activity is boulder tossing, but he is also proud of how far and accurately he can toss firestone sacks and tree trunks. Danyl was given more opportunity to be proud when his father was chosen as a professor for the new Caucus. His father was able to convince the Smithcraft to let Danyl accompany him as is traditional for a Blacksmith to have a few chosen apprentices who learn under his watchful eye. His father hopes that exposure to the minds of the Caucus may cure Danyl of his laziness and encourage him to have some ambition for himself.

Danyl's parents are Master Smith Thomyl and Danara.
